Like everyone who tastes these
little Maui treasures, we had to find others that could satisfy our
unnatural desire for these cookie-filled pie-snack cake. The crispy
manju from
Home
Maid Bakery on Maui is our 5-star; there are other types (like the
traditional Japanese manju), but this is our quest... Hawaiian manju.

We tried to get manju
at the Lawai'i Food Mart, but the store was out.
After much searching we found some at Sueoka's in Koloa.
The size was perfect, and the appearance was nice; but a little on
the heavy side. The crust was too soft and the dough was more heavy
and gluttonous, not the crumbly fall-apart texture we wanted.
We tried both the bean and apple. The bean tasted
nice but the texture was gritty, not smooth. The apple was
identical to a cooked apple pie filling.

We got the last package
of crispy apple manju at the Kojima Store in Kapa'a. Less of
what we want than the manju from Sueoka's: too large, way too heavy,
not crispy (it was after 2pm, I don't know how long they remain
crispy), a very dense, gluttonous dough. The apple filling tasted
like canned. Manju at Kojima Store in

We bought manju at the
most recommended place on Kauai... Menehune Food Mart in Lawai'i
(2-3687 Kaumualii Highway). It is very much a pie crust manju, but
the crust was so saturated with oil it was almost inedible. We
couldn't taste the filling, it was overshadowed by the thick oily
crust (but it was flakey).
We had so hoped to have great manju today. We tried sweet
potato and the bean.

We haven't looked for
Manju after the Menehune fiasco. Today we tried the Kukuiula
Store (2827 Poipu Rd, Koloa), but they don't carry manju. |

Hoped to find manju at
Wal-Mart, they sell it in Maui. No luck; no manju.
None at Star Market either. |
