The surf is still rough, but the skies are nice.
We started with breakfast at the golf course (no, we didn't golf).
Drove west doing GeoCaches. Saw some beautiful off-the-beaten-path locations:
Loved Kukuiolono Park; it has amazing views to the south.
Crossed Swinging Bridge in Hanapepe.
Amazed by the force of the ocean at Glassbeach.
Had ice cream at Kauai Chocolate (get the tropical with dark chocolate).
Drove to the end of the road; at the end of the Napali coast is Polihale Park. Stayed for the sunset and saw the launch of 2 missiles (Aegis ballistic missile defense system, aka, Star wars) from the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) next to the park.
We wanted to have dinner at the Shrimp Station in Waimea, but they were closed. Ate at Waimea Brewing instead (very average.)

Joe's on the Green. I asked for Egg Bennedict with Kaula Pork.

Ron is here for all the chicks at the beach.

Stopped at Poipu Beach after breakfast.

Kukiolono Park GeoCache.

Kauai Chocolate - Valerie's Ice cream combo

Red Dirt T-shirt Factory

It was across the street from Kauai Chocolate.

Mike Rowe (Dirty Jobs) needs to film here.

The red Kauai mud is on those walls.

Glassbeach GeoCache.

Glassbeach used to be a dump - how terrible.

Russian Fort GeoCache.

Swinging Bridge in Hanapepe

Swinging Bridge GeoCache.

Polihale Park at the end of a 5.3-mile rough dirt road.

Polihale GeoCache.

After the 5.3 miles (30 minutes) on a "bad" dirt road, Valerie said "I want that GeoCache!."

Ron found the GeoCache up in the lava boulders.

Valerie on the lava boulders below the cliffs.

Aloha from Ron and Valerie's shadows

That's a friendly shirt.

We stayed an extra 90 minutes to see the sunset.

Missile #1 contrail

Just missed it; we had just left the beach. Valerie said "they're shooting fireworks..." We both realized at the same time; those aren't fireworks.

Missile #1 contrail

This explained all the security guards we saw on the drive to the park.

Missile #2

A few seconds later a second missile went up. Valerie managed to swing the camera around just in time.

Some explosive activity up there.

A while later Valerie saw a little "smoke ring" form in the sky over the ocean (a hit?).

We were glad we stayed for the sunset. Quite a bonus.

From The Garden Island newspaper:
U.S. military intercepts two ballistic missiles in test This image shows a threat representative target launching from the Pacific Missile Range Facility soon to be intercepted as part of a Missile Defense Agency test of the sea-based capability under development, yet tactically certified and deployed with the U.S. Navy, aboard the Aegis cruiser USS Lake Erie. The intercepts occurred yesterday about 250 miles from Kaua‘i and approximately 100 miles above the Pacific Ocean.
