Today we went up to the top of Haleakala mountain/volcano. You can drive from zero to 10,000' but you gotta walk the last 23' to the top.

On the way back we stopped at the Kula Botanical Gardens.

We were starving and dehydrated so we stopped at the Kahului Da Kitchen for an authentic Hawaiian Plate Lunch of Pork Lau Lau, Kalua Pork, Chicken Long Rice and Lomi Salmon - with a sweet potato pie for dessert.

The "Big Island" in the distance from the top of Haleakala

It's the thin air...

Someone forgot to tell Ron that it's 30 degrees colder at the top

Looking back from the peak to the visitor center

"Step back a bit"

"No, you step back a bit"

Haleakala Observatories

Moonscapish terrain looking into the crater

Cinder cones from past eruptions

Shaka! (that's the Hawaiian hand signal for "all right", "cool", and "hang loose")

"Both of you, step back a bit..."

View from partway down the mountain

Hole in the clouds

37 switchbacks to go. Eyes on the road.
